Alnmouth to Warkworth Dog Walk: Northumberland Coast Path Guide
Alnmouth to Warkworth, Northumberland
The Alnmouth to Warkworth coast path covers 10 km between two Northumberland villages, with a long open beach on the middle section that is rarely busy outside the height of summer. The route follows the England Coast Path through dune grassland and over Birling Carrs on the rocky foreshore, arriving at Warkworth Castle above the River Coquet. Sand is firm on the open beach, rough and stony over the Carrs section, and soft in the dune margins. For dogs that like sea swimming, this walk is one of the best on this coast: long, open beach with multiple sea entry points and space to run properly between the two villages. Two practical points before you set out. The Birling Carrs section is only passable at low to mid tide. And the Aln estuary at the Alnmouth end must not be crossed directly at the estuary mouth: it is deceptively fast-moving even when it looks shallow. Check tide tables before leaving and plan the route to use the road bridge. The walk is linear, so two cars or a willingness to return along the same path is required. The Mason’s Arms at Warkworth keeps barrels of biscuits behind the bar and sells dog ice cream.
Frequently asked questions
Can I walk from Alnmouth to Warkworth on the beach with my dog?
Yes. Both Alnmouth Beach and Warkworth Beach are dog-friendly year-round with no formal seasonal bans. The open beach section between the two villages is excellent for off-lead running. Keep dogs under close control near the dune grassland sections, where ground-nesting birds (including ringed plovers and Arctic terns) are present from April to August.
Are dogs allowed at Warkworth Castle?
Yes. Dogs are welcome throughout the Warkworth Castle site on leads, and a water bowl is provided. Dogs are not permitted at the Hermitage, a separate attraction accessed by riverboat from the castle. Warkworth Castle is managed by English Heritage.
How do I cross the Aln estuary safely on the Alnmouth to Warkworth walk?
Do not cross the Aln estuary at the mouth. The estuary looks shallow but is deceptively fast-moving and can be dangerous even at low tide. The safe route goes inland along the riverbank path to the road bridge at the north end of Alnmouth. Check tide tables before you set out, as the Birling Carrs section of the route further south is also only passable at low to mid tide.
Are there seasonal dog restrictions on any beaches between Alnmouth and Warkworth?
No formal seasonal dog bans apply to any section of the Alnmouth to Warkworth coast path. Both Alnmouth and Warkworth beaches are confirmed dog-friendly year-round. Seasonal guidance around ground-nesting birds in the dune sections is advisory rather than a formal ban - keep dogs away from dune grassland between April and August when terns and plovers are nesting.
