The lochside walk from Balmaha to Milarrochy Bay on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond is one of the most straightforward introductions to walking dogs in Scotland. The path stays flat, the loch is immediately beside you for most of the route, and Milarrochy Bay is a consistently calm spot for a swim.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code applies. Off-lead is reasonable on the lochside sections, with dogs kept closer through the village and near the car park where paths are busiest.

Midges are significant here from May through September in still, humid conditions. They affect dogs and owners equally. In summer the loch carries considerable boat traffic, so keep dogs clear of the main channel when swimming.

Balmaha is a major West Highland Way waypoint and the 177-space car park fills before mid-morning on sunny summer weekends. An early start or a weekday visit makes the whole thing considerably more enjoyable.

The Oak Tree Inn is directly at the start of the walk, dogs welcome in the outdoor areas. It is a Scotland’s Top Pub award winner and a reliable post-walk option at any time of day.

Frequently asked questions

Can my dog swim in Loch Lomond at Balmaha?

Yes. Loch Lomond is generally safe for dog swimming near Balmaha. Milarrochy Bay, a short distance south on the lochside path, is a popular and calm spot. The water is clean and cold. Be aware of boat traffic in summer (May to September). Always supervise - loch water can be colder than expected even in summer.

Are there dog restrictions in Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park?

The Loch Lomond Byelaws 2023 (in force November 2024) relate to water vessels and loch safety - they do not restrict dog walking on land. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code applies throughout the National Park, giving the right to responsible access. Dogs should be under proper control, on leads near livestock, and waste picked up and removed.

Is Conic Hill worth adding to this walk?

Yes, strongly. Conic Hill (361m) is a short but rewarding extension - approximately 3 extra miles (4.8km) and 330m of ascent. The summit views across Loch Lomond and the islands are exceptional. The hill sits directly on the Highland Boundary Fault Line. Note: dogs must be on leads in the enclosed fields at the base, and during lambing (late April to mid-May) dogs are not permitted in those fields at all.

How busy does Balmaha get in summer?

Very. It is a major West Highland Way staging point and a popular day trip from Glasgow (approximately 45 minutes by car). The car park (177 spaces) fills by mid-morning on sunny summer weekends. Arrive before 9am or park in Drymen (3 miles away) and walk or take the bus. Early morning or evening visits with a dog are far more enjoyable.
