Bamburgh Beach Dog Walk: Year-Round Off-Lead Access Below the Castle
Bamburgh, Northumberland
Wide pale sand stretches for several kilometres below Bamburgh Castle, and unlike most Northumberland beaches, the Bamburgh Beach walk carries no seasonal dog ban: dogs are welcome year-round on the full length of the strand. The beach shelves gently into the sea and dogs swim here easily in calm conditions; the entry is gradual, the sand firm at low tide, and the water clean. That year-round open access is a real asset, as several nearby stretches of Northumberland coast carry seasonal restrictions. Come at low tide if you can. At high tide the beach narrows significantly, the walking space reduces to a strip at the foot of the dunes, and some sections become awkward. The castle grounds are accessible on leads; no indoor access for dogs, but the approach and grounds add a circuit worth combining with the beach. In spring and early summer, keep dogs out of the dune grassland where ringed plovers and terns nest. The Lord Crewe on Front Street takes dogs in the bar and is a short walk from the beach car park.
Frequently asked questions
Are dogs allowed on Bamburgh Beach all year round?
Yes. Bamburgh Beach has no seasonal dog ban. Dogs are welcome on the full length of the beach throughout the year. This is confirmed across multiple sources including The Beach Guide and Northumberland Dog Stays. Note that the nearby Ross Back Sands beach (approximately 4 km north) does have a ban from 1 May to 30 July - that restriction does not apply to Bamburgh Beach itself.
Can I take my dog into Bamburgh Castle?
Dogs are welcome in the castle grounds on a short lead but are not permitted inside the State Rooms, Clock Tower Cafe, Armstrong Museum, or any indoor areas of the castle. Assistance dogs are permitted inside. The grounds and exterior approach are worth including as part of a Bamburgh beach circuit.
Is Bamburgh Beach safe for dogs to swim?
Yes, in calm conditions. The beach shelves gently and the sea entry is gradual, making it safe for most dogs. At low tide the sand is firm and the water entry straightforward. In rough weather or strong offshore winds, use your judgement. Check tide times before you go - the beach narrows significantly at high tide.
Are there dog-friendly pubs or cafes in Bamburgh village?
Yes. The Lord Crewe on Front Street (NE69 7BL) is the main option - dogs are welcome in the bar and beer garden. The Middle Inn on Front Street is also dog-friendly. Both are a short walk from the Links Road beach car park. The Clock Tower Cafe inside the castle grounds does not admit dogs.
