Bookham Common sits ten minutes from the M25 but the ancient oak woodland at its centre takes time to settle into. The three commons together cover around 370 acres and the character shifts as you move between them: open grassland on The Plains, dense mixed woodland through Little Bookham, and the chalk downland edge at Fetcham. For a dog that likes genuine variety - grass, mud, scrub, and tree cover - this walk delivers it without requiring a long drive.

The Plains section has cattle, which means leads in that zone. From 1 March to 31 July, National Trust guidance extends lead requirements to heathland sections to protect ground-nesting birds.

The practical note worth flagging: Little Bookham Common has poor drainage and ground disturbances from the Second World War that hold water for months. The inner grass paths become seriously waterlogged from November through to March. Boots are not optional in winter. Tunnel Car Park is approximately 150 metres from Bookham train station, making this one of the most rail-accessible dog walks in Surrey. The Old Crown in Great Bookham is dog-friendly and within walking distance of the station.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bookham Common good for dogs year-round?

Generally yes. In winter, bring waterproof boots and expect significant mud, particularly on Little Bookham Common which has poor drainage. In summer, the ancient oak woodland provides excellent shade. Keep dogs on leads when the cattle are grazing on The Plains.

Is there parking at Bookham Commons?

The main car park is Tunnel Car Park (KT23 3LT), roughly 150m from Bookham train station. NT members park free; others pay via JustPark. There is limited free roadside parking at Hundred Pound Bridge and Mark Oak Gate.

Are there ground-nesting bird restrictions at Bookham Commons?

Yes. Between 1 March and 31 July, the National Trust asks walkers to keep dogs on leads in heathland sections and to stay on paths. The site is a SSSI partly designated for its breeding bird populations.

Can I get here by train?

Yes - one of the most train-accessible dog walks in Surrey. Bookham station (London Waterloo to Effingham Junction line) is approximately 150m from Tunnel Car Park. The walk starts essentially from the station.
