Bute Park in Cardiff runs for 56 acres along the River Taff with the castle at its southern edge, and the combination of riverside path, arboretum, and open meadow makes it a better day out with a dog than most city parks manage. The Taff Trail cycle route passes through it, which is the one complication.

Dogs can be off-lead in most of the park. Lead zones are signposted throughout. Keep dogs on a lead near the North Road and Castle Street entrances, which open directly onto busy roads, and on the shared Taff Trail path sections where cyclists travel at speed. Extending leads are a particular hazard on the cycle path.

The River Taff is tidal in Cardiff and runs fast after heavy rain. Dogs swim in it, but water quality is subject to urban runoff and banks can be sudden. Avoid after heavy rainfall.

The Summerhouse Cafe inside the park provides water bowls and dog ice creams in summer and is open daily from 8am. The Blackweir Tavern at 35 North Road sits on the Taff Trail at the north edge of the park and is also dog-friendly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I let my dog off the lead in Bute Park?

Dogs can be off-lead in most of Bute Park, but there are designated on-lead zones which are signposted. Keep your dog on a lead near the park entrances adjacent to busy Cardiff roads and follow any lead signs you encounter.

Is the Taff Trail safe for dogs?

The Taff Trail section through Bute Park is a shared-use path used by cyclists and pedestrians. Keep your dog on a short lead on the shared path sections, especially on busy weekends. Extending leads are particularly hazardous here as cyclists may not be able to stop in time.

Can my dog swim in the River Taff in Bute Park?

There is no formal ban on dogs entering the River Taff in Bute Park. However, the river is tidal in Cardiff, can run fast after heavy rain, and water quality is subject to urban runoff. Exercise caution, supervise dogs closely, and avoid the river after heavy rainfall.

Is there a dog-friendly cafe inside Bute Park?

Yes - the Summerhouse Cafe is inside the park and is explicitly dog-friendly, providing water bowls, dog treats, and dog ice creams in summer. Open daily from 8am (9am Sundays) to 5pm. The Blackweir Tavern at 35 North Road is on the Taff Trail at the north edge of the park and is also dog-friendly.
