Chipping Campden and Dover’s Hill is one of the finest escarpment walks in the Cotswolds, combining the honey-stone market town with the wide open ridgeline above it. From the National Trust car park at the top, the path drops through a natural limestone amphitheatre - the site of the Cotswold Olimpick Games since the 1600s - before the edge path opens out to views across the Vale of Evesham. On a clear day you can see into Worcestershire and beyond. The route down through Chipping Campden itself passes some of the best-preserved medieval architecture in England, with plenty of dog-friendly pubs at the end of it. The Noel Arms has a dedicated dog-friendly bar and water for dogs.

On-lead only: the National Trust requires dogs on a short lead at all times on Dover’s Hill due to year-round sheep grazing on the escarpment. This is a non-negotiable rule, not a seasonal request. The walk rewards the discipline, though - the views from the rim are exceptional and the path is wide enough that two dogs on leads do not feel crowded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I let my dog off the lead at Dover’s Hill?

No. The National Trust requires dogs to be kept on a short lead at all times on Dover’s Hill. This is due to year-round sheep grazing on the escarpment and is a permanent rule, not a seasonal restriction. It applies to the full National Trust section of the walk. There are no off-lead sections on this specific route.

Is there parking at Dover’s Hill and do I need to pay?

Yes. The Dover’s Hill National Trust car park (GL55 6UW) is free to NT members; non-members pay a charge via the JustPark app. It is open dawn to dusk. A free alternative is on-street parking on Back Ends in Chipping Campden, a short walk from the start of the route. The Chipping Campden School car park (GL55 6HT) is also available at weekends and during school holidays.

Are there dog-friendly pubs in Chipping Campden on this route?

Yes. Chipping Campden has several dog-friendly options. The Noel Arms on High Street is the most confirmed - dogs are welcome in Dover’s Bar, the Coffee Shop, lounge, and conservatory, with water provided. The Red Lion Tavern on High Street is also dog-friendly. Most pubs in the village accept dogs; water bowls are common. The village is the natural finish point for the walk coming down off the escarpment.

Is Dover’s Hill suitable for dogs in summer?

Yes, with care. The walk is exposed at the hilltop and the stony escarpment tracks can heat up in direct sun in June to August. Bring water for your dog and avoid the hottest part of the day in summer. The sheep grazing is year-round so the on-lead requirement applies in all seasons. Ticks and adders are both present on the gorse and scrub edges of the escarpment from spring through summer.
