Epping Forest is ancient pollarded hornbeam woodland on the edge of east London, and the Connaught Water circuit is the best entry point into it - a clear lake ringed by old oaks, wide enough forest tracks for dogs to range off-lead, and a sense of genuine wildness that is unusual this close to the M25. The City of London Corporation, which manages the forest, does not require leads provided your dog is under effective control, though you should keep them close when near cattle: a conservation grazing programme brings livestock into the forest, and the City of London runs a real-time GPS tracker on their website showing where the herds currently are - worth checking before you visit. Fallow deer are present throughout the forest; dogs with unreliable recall and a strong chase instinct will need more management here than on an open field walk.

The Connaught Water circuit itself runs to around six to eight kilometres, with extensions possible onto Chingford Plain and toward High Beach. Before letting your dog swim in the lake, check the City of London’s current notices - Connaught Water has a history of blue-green algae outbreaks in warm weather, particularly between July and September, and the risk is real.

Blue-green algae risk at Connaught Water: The lake has a documented history of blue-green algae outbreaks, particularly in warm weather July to September. Blue-green algae can be fatal to dogs. Check the City of London’s current notices before allowing dogs to enter or drink from Connaught Water.

Seasonal notes: July to September - blue-green algae risk at Connaught Water in warm weather. Check current notices. Year-round - cattle grazing in designated zones with GPS collars. Check the City of London cattle tracker (cityoflondon.gov.uk) before visiting and keep dogs on leads near cattle. October to March - forest paths away from the lake can be very muddy.

Safety note - cattle: Conservation grazing is active. Use the City of London cattle tracker to see current herd locations. Pass cows widely and quietly. Dogs on leads near cattle at all times.

Safety note - deer: Fallow deer are present throughout the forest. Dogs with poor recall may chase deer - this is illegal under forest byelaws and dangerous, as deer can kick and injure dogs.

Parking: Connaught Water car park, Rangers Road, Chingford (E4 7QH). Up to 1 hour £1.75, up to 2 hours £3.00, 2 to 4 hours £4.50, over 4 hours £7.00. Motorbikes and Blue Badge holders free.

Nearest station: Chingford (Elizabeth line / Greater Anglia), approximately 20 to 30 minutes walk.

Dog waste bins: Bins at main car parks including Connaught Water and High Beach. Mid-forest bin provision is limited - carry waste bags for routes away from the car parks.

Dog-friendly stops: No dog-friendly pub on this specific circuit verified at time of writing. Chingford town centre has options - check directly before visiting.
