Llansteffan castle stands above the Tywi Estuary in Carmarthenshire at the top of a short, steep climb from the beach. The view from the top takes in the Tywi and the Taf merging below in a broad estuary, with the Gower Peninsula visible across the water on clear days. The castle is managed by Cadw, free to enter, and dogs are welcome on leads on the ground floor.

Llansteffan Beach has a dog ban at its northern end from 1 May to 30 September. The southern and middle sections are open to dogs year-round. The estuary looks swimmable at low tide but strong tidal currents and shifting sandbanks make it genuinely dangerous. Do not allow your dog into the estuary channels.

The walk passes alongside Lord’s Park Farm and farmland where livestock may be present. Leads on those sections.

This is a quiet part of Carmarthenshire that most visitors pass through rather than stop at. The walk rewards the detour.

Both The Castle Inn and The Inn at the Sticks are in the village, a short walk from the beach car park, and both welcome dogs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Llansteffan Castle free to visit?

Yes - Castell Llansteffan is managed by Cadw and is free to enter. Dogs are welcome on short leads on the ground floor areas. Upper levels, tower stairs, and some interior areas are not accessible to dogs. Open approximately 10am to 4pm; closed 24 to 26 December and 1 January.

Can my dog go on Llansteffan Beach all year?

Not on all sections. There is a seasonal dog ban at the northern end of Llansteffan Beach from 1 May to 30 September. The southern and middle sections remain open to dogs year-round. Check signage on arrival.

Is it safe to let my dog swim in the Tywi Estuary?

Do not allow dogs to swim in the estuary channels or attempt to cross the river, even at low tide. The Tywi Estuary has strong tidal currents and shifting sandbanks. Beach paddling in the shallow sandy sections at the shoreline is fine, but keep dogs away from the main estuary channels.

Are there livestock on the walk route?

The route passes alongside Lord’s Park Farm and farmland sections. While not a heavily livestock-grazed circuit, dogs should be on leads when passing farmland. The beach and castle sections have no livestock.
