Llyn Padarn Lake Circuit
Llanberis, Gwynedd
Llyn Padarn runs through the heart of Llanberis beneath the shadow of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), with the terraced workings of Dinorwig Quarry above and Eryri’s mountain profile ahead for much of the circuit. It is one of the few walks in the national park that stays flat while surrounded by genuinely dramatic scenery.
The Y Glyn lagoon at the eastern end has official Bathing Water Status, rated good to excellent by Natural Resources Wales, with a shallow sandy entry that works well for dogs. This is the best freshwater swimming spot in Llanberis and dogs use it accordingly.
One current notice: a section of the southern lakeside path is closed for National Grid works until early 2027. The alternative via Coed Dinorwig woodland is waymarked but steep and can be muddy. Check signage at the car park before setting out.
The route passes near the quarry edges where slate fragments can cut paws badly. Stay on waymarked paths and keep dogs off any unmaintained slate surfaces.
Pete’s Eats on Llanberis High Street, recently refurbished and dog-friendly, is the best post-walk option in town.
Frequently asked questions
Can my dog swim in Llyn Padarn?
Yes - Llyn Padarn is one of the most dog-friendly lakes in Wales for swimming. The Y Glyn lagoon area at the eastern end has a shallow, sandy entry and is popular and safe. The lake has official Bathing Water Status and water quality is consistently rated good to excellent by Natural Resources Wales.
Is the full circular walk around Llyn Padarn currently open?
Not entirely. As of 2024, a section of the standard route along the southern shore is temporarily closed due to National Grid works. This closure is expected to last until early 2027. Alternative paths through Coed Dinorwig woodland are marked but are steep and may be muddy. Check signage at the car park before setting out.
Are there any slate quarry dangers near the walk?
Yes - the route passes near Dinorwig Quarry. Always follow waymarked paths and do not allow dogs or children to explore off-path near the quarry. Slate fragments can cut paws and quarry edges have sudden drops. The waymarked route itself is safe when followed correctly.
Does Eryri National Park have specific dog rules?
Eryri follows the CRoW Act (same as England). On open access land, dogs must be on a lead no longer than 2 metres from 1 March to 31 July. On Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the National Park recommends leads from May to September during the main walking season. For the Llyn Padarn circuit, close control is required and leads recommended near any livestock.
