Penllergare Valley Woods sits directly above junction 47 of the M4 and most people who drive past have no idea it is there. The woods occupy a restored Victorian estate, and the centrepiece is a three-channel stone waterfall on the River Llan, a Victorian structure buried under silted debris for decades and recovered by the Penllergare Trust through 30 years of restoration work.

The path down to the waterfall is the one steep, slippery section on an otherwise easy circuit. Wet leaves on the boardwalk in autumn are the main hazard underfoot.

Dogs are on leads from March to August under Trust policy - one month longer than the CRoW Act minimum. Near all water on the site throughout the year, leads are required and dogs are not permitted in the water at any point. That includes the lakes, river, and waterfall.

One practical rule that matters: the car park barrier closes at 5pm every day without exception.

The Coffee Shop at the visitor centre is dog-friendly in certain areas and the most convenient option after the walk.

Frequently asked questions

Can my dog go off-lead at Penllergare Valley Woods?

Dogs can be off-lead in the woodland areas outside the nesting season. However, leads are required from March to August (inclusive) to protect nesting birds - note this is one month longer than the statutory CRoW Act requirement (which ends 31 July). Leads are also required at all times near the waterfall, lakes, and river, and in the visitor centre, coffee shop, garden, and car park areas.

Can my dog go in the water at Penllergare?

No - the Penllergare Trust explicitly prohibits dogs from entering the lakes, river, or waterfall area. These areas can be very dangerous with hidden hazards. Keep your dog on a lead near all water features on site.

Who manages Penllergare Valley Woods?

The site is managed by the Penllergare Trust, a charitable organisation that has been restoring the Victorian estate since the 1990s. It is not managed by the National Trust, Cadw, or any local council.

What is the waterfall at Penllergare like?

A Victorian-era man-made structure built by the Dillwyn Llewelyn family using massive masonry blocks held together with iron ties. The River Llan cascades in three separate channels over the structure. Genuinely impressive, particularly after heavy rainfall. There is a viewing point, but the surrounding area is wet and slippery and dogs must be kept on leads and out of the water.
