Tentsmuir Forest and Beach

Tentsmuir is a stretch of Scots pine and ancient coastal dune on the Fife coast, backing onto one of Scotland’s most significant seal colonies at Tentsmuir Point. The walk combines forest paths with a wide beach foreshore and can be done comfortably in a half day.
Common seals pup here in June and July. Grey seals arrive from October. NatureScot asks that dogs are kept on leads throughout the National Nature Reserve sections year-round to protect the colony. Signs mark the NNR boundaries. Getting too close to hauled seals, even unintentionally, can cause a stampede that injures pups. In the main forest interior, off-lead under proper control is generally fine.
The tide at Tentsmuir comes in quickly across wide sandflats. Do not walk far onto the tidal sand toward Tentsmuir Point. Check tide times before visiting. Leuchars military base is immediately adjacent and low-flying aircraft are a regular occurrence, worth noting if your dog is noise-sensitive.
There are no facilities at the car park. The Larick Cafe at Tayport, about four miles away, is dog-friendly. The Rhynd in Leuchars is the nearest dog-friendly pub.

Can I let my dog off-lead on the beach at Tentsmuir?
On main beach sections away from the seal haul-out area, dogs may be off-lead in less sensitive sections. Within the National Nature Reserve - including Tentsmuir Point and its surroundings - NatureScot asks that dogs be kept on leads at all times to protect seals and nesting birds. Signs in the NNR mark the boundaries. In the forest interior, off-lead under proper control is generally acceptable.
Is the tide dangerous at Tentsmuir?
Yes, caution is warranted. The tidal flats north of the beach extend well out to sea and the tide comes in rapidly. Do not walk far onto the tidal sands, especially with a dog that may run ahead. Always check tide times before visiting. Best visited 2 to 3 hours either side of low tide.
Are there seals at Tentsmuir all year round?
Yes. Tentsmuir Point hosts both common seals and grey seals - one of the few places in Britain where both species can be seen together. Common seals are present year-round (pupping June to July). Grey seals arrive from autumn (pupping October to December). NatureScot asks visitors to keep at least 100 metres from hauled seals.
Is the noise from Leuchars military base a problem?
Leuchars Station (formerly RAF Leuchars) is directly adjacent to the approach road. Military aircraft fly frequently and low. The walking route is entirely safe from a military access perspective. However, the noise can be sudden and loud, which may startle anxious dogs. Worth noting for nervous dogs.
