Wenlock Edge Dog Walk: Ancient Limestone Woodland and Escarpment Views
Much Wenlock, Shropshire
Wenlock Edge runs for 18 miles along an ancient limestone escarpment, and the National Trust section near Much Wenlock gives the best of it: dense oak and ash woodland, old quarry workings with their limekiln smells, and sudden clearings where the scarp drops away to the Shropshire plain. In late April and May the woodland floor is carpeted with wild garlic. It is a very different walk from the open moorland of Stiperstones or the Long Mynd - enclosed, varied underfoot, and full of the kind of scent variety that woodland dogs in particular seem to work very hard through. The Wenlock Edge Inn sits right on the escarpment with views across the hills - reopened in 2022 after a long closure and now dog-friendly throughout.
Partial off-lead: there is no confirmed livestock grazing on the woodland paths and the National Trust guidance here is close control rather than mandatory leads. This makes Wenlock Edge the most practical off-lead option of the four Shropshire walks. Ticks are the main hazard - ancient broadleaf woodland is prime tick habitat from March to October, and a thorough check after every visit is worth making a habit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I let my dog off the lead at Wenlock Edge?
Partially, and this is the most off-lead-capable of the four Shropshire walks featured here. Wenlock Edge is managed National Trust woodland, not open access moorland, so the CRoW Act seasonal lead requirement (1 March to 31 July) does not apply in the same way. There is no confirmed livestock grazing on the woodland paths themselves. The NT guidance is to keep dogs under close control, not to keep them on lead throughout. Close control applies in the car parks and on shared bridleways used by cyclists.
Are there ticks in Wenlock Edge woodland?
Yes - this is the highest tick-risk walk in the Shropshire group. Ancient broadleaf woodland with roe deer present is prime tick habitat, and ticks are active from March through to October. Check your dog thoroughly after every visit, paying particular attention to the head, neck, ears, and between the toes. Treat with a veterinary-recommended tick preventative before visiting if your dog is not already covered. Ticks can be removed safely with a tick removal tool - twist anticlockwise to remove the whole tick without squeezing the body.
Is there parking at Wenlock Edge and does it cost anything?
Yes, and both car parks are free. The National Trust car park near Much Wenlock (TF13 6EN) is free for all visitors. Presthope car park (TF13 6DQ) is also free and open 24 hours. Both are small and the lane to Presthope is narrow - allow space to pass other vehicles. Much Wenlock town is approximately 1 mile from the car parks and has public toilets and several dog-friendly cafes and pubs, including Tea Junction and the George and Dragon.
Is the Wenlock Edge Inn dog-friendly?
Yes. The Wenlock Edge Inn sits right on the B4371 on the escarpment itself and is dog-friendly throughout. It reopened in August 2022 after an eight-year closure, so it may not appear on older listings. The pub serves food and has views across the Shropshire Hills - a good mid-walk or post-walk stop on the full circular. In Much Wenlock, Tea Junction has been named Shropshire’s most dog-friendly cafe venue, and the George and Dragon pub also confirms dogs welcome.
