From Edale, Kinder Scout is the most demanding walk on the Sniffout site. Jacob’s Ladder, the stone staircase from the valley floor to the plateau edge, is steep and relentless; beyond it the character changes entirely. The 636 m plateau is vast, flat, and disorienting in mist, tracked by eroded peat formations called peat hags that make navigation genuine work.Kinder Downfall, the plateau’s western waterfall, is the circuit’s centrepiece. In strong westerlies the 30-metre drop reverses and the water blows upward rather than falling, one of those things that is difficult to believe until you are standing in front of it. The Grindsbrook Clough descent, a rocky stream gully from the plateau rim, returns you to the Edale valley wet and satisfied. This is not the walk for puppies, elderly dogs, or flat-faced breeds. Dogs need to be fit, confident off-lead on rough terrain, and used to open moorland. For that combination, it is one of the most rewarding days in the Peak District. The Old Nags Head in Edale is dog-friendly and the official start of the Pennine Way. Edale station is five minutes from the pub on the Hope Valley line.

Partial off lead on plateau, leads on farm approach paths
Yes, but it demands more than most walks. The plateau is full open access land and dogs can be off-lead outside the bird protection period (1 March to 31 July). The challenges are navigation in poor visibility, deep peat bog, and exposed weather. Dogs need to be fit, used to rough terrain, and have reliable recall. Not suitable for puppies, elderly dogs, or flat-faced breeds in warm weather.
Can I get to Kinder Scout by train?
Yes. Edale station is served by the Hope Valley line (Sheffield to Manchester). The walk starts directly from the village, approximately 5 minutes from the station. It is one of the best train-accessible mountain walks in the Peak District.
What is the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass?
On 24 April 1932, a group of ramblers deliberately trespassed on Kinder Scout to protest the exclusion of ordinary people from the open moorland. The event became a turning point in the campaign for the right to roam, eventually leading to the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Today, Kinder Scout is fully open access land.
How long does Kinder Scout take?
The standard circuit from Edale via Jacob’s Ladder, Kinder Downfall, and Grindsbrook Clough is 16 to 17 km (approximately 10 miles). Allow 5 to 6 hours including stops. A shorter option is the Grindsbrook Clough approach to the plateau edge and back, approximately 10 km (2.5 to 3.5 hours).
